| New Game: True Crime First Look |
|
Mar 10, 2010 - 9:01 AM - by News Bot

The third game in this sandbox action series has you exploring Hong Kong as an undercover cop.
If you're the type of person who enjoys video games as a form of escapism, then you may have found the first entry in Activision's True Crime series a bit of a head-scratcher. Of all places, the game was set in Los Angeles--otherwise known as the most frequent butt of jokes about traffic jams and endless urban sprawl. While the game itself proved to be a fairly entertaining action romp, it's hard to deny that the setting could have been a tad more exotic. It's a different situation, however, for the upcoming True Crime reboot from United Front Games. Set in the vibrant metropolis of Hong Kong, the next True Crime--this one free of subtitles--has you taking on the role of an undercover cop attempting to infiltrate the notorious Triads that plague this dense and colorful city.

| New Game: Mafia II Exclusive Hands-On - Driving, Open-World Exploration, and Cover-to-Cover Shooting |
|
Mar 10, 2010 - 9:01 AM - by News Bot

Mafia II is a gritty crime-drama game that will let you climb the ranks of a post-war mafia syndicate to become a made man. We try out this sequel's driving, exploration, and ferocious gun battles at GDC 2010.

While the original Mafia was a challenging and underrated cult classic that told the tale of a crime drama in 1930s America, Mafia II will be a sequel that takes place in a bigger, postwar world with faster cars, bigger guns, and much higher stakes. We took a second look at the upcoming sequel by watching a demonstration of part of the early game and then playing through a level that takes place about halfway through it. We stole cars, got into fistfights, bribed the police, fought through a vicious gun battle, and even picked up a girlie magazine along the way. And we have much to report. Please be advised that this story may contain minor spoilers.

Ex-baseballer Curt Schilling's studio inks deal to publish PC, 360, and PS3 single-player RPG penned by author R.A. Salvatore; Oblivion, Morrowind vet lead designer; Spawn's Todd McFarlane art directing.
Electronic Arts' EA Partners program made headlines last week for striking publishing deals with indie developers Hothead Games and Klei Entertainment. Today, the company made a larger announcement--a Big Huge one, in fact. Ex-baseballer Curt Schilling's developer 38 Studios has struck a deal with EA to publish an upcoming single-player role-playing game. | News: US Gamers Spend $3.8 Billion On MMOs Yearly |
|
Mar 10, 2010 - 2:51 AM - by News Bot

eldavojohn writes "A new report from Games Industry indicates that MMO gamers in the United States paid $3.8 billion to play last year, with an analysis of five European countries bringing the total close to $4.5 billion USD. In America, the report estimated that payments for boxed content and client downloads amounted to a measly $400 million, while the subscriptions came to $2.38 billion. Hopefully that will fund some developer budgets for bigger and better MMOs yet to come. The study also found that roughly a quarter of the US population plays some form of MMO. Surely MMOs are shaping up to be a juicy industry, and a market that can satisfy people of all walks of life."
