rss US Government Using PS3s To Break Encryption

Entropy98 writes "It seems that the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement Cyber Crimes Center, known as C3, has replaced its '$8,000 Tableau/Dell server combination' with more efficient and much cheaper $300 PS3s. Each PS3 is capable of 4 million passwords per second, and C3 currently has 20 PS3s with plans to buy 40 more. Naturally this is only being used to break encryption on computers seized with a warrant and suspected of harboring child pornography."

PS3 has been use for a lot more things than this. The PS3's that came out before September had even the choice to install a distro of linux onto it, so it has been great with many researchers. They are not as efficient as they say them to be, but they are still worth it. Most of those researchers however use it for the media coverage which they would get.

rss US Air Force Buying Another 2,200 PS3s

bleedingpegasus sends word that the US Air Force will be grabbing up 2,200 new PlayStation 3 consoles for research into supercomputing. They already have a cluster made from 336 of the old-style (non-Slim) consoles, which they've used for a variety of purposes, including "processing multiple radar images into higher resolution composite images (known as synthetic aperture radar image formation), high-def video processing, and 'neuromorphic computing.'" According to the Justification Review Document (DOC), "Once the hardware configuration is implemented, software code will be developed in-house for cluster implementation utilizing a Linux-based operating software."

It seems that the only thing the PS3 can't do is make coffee but I'm sure that that is in the pipeline

I've not seen Stargate Universe yet. I've got all the SG1's series and films and I've got 8 episodes of stargate atlantis left to watch then I'll take a look at stargate Universe.

Well, PS3 can't play many good games so I guess it needs this.
