Actually the concept for Bumptop was around before Compiz. There was a even video showing a working prototype of bumptop floating around way back in early 2006, mentioning that bumptop would be "avaliable soon". So it's a fairly original concept, just took too long to release it to the public.

The prototype actually had alot more working features than bumptop has at the moment, So i expect they will be added to the pro version in the future.

I don't think bumptop was ever meant to increase productivity, but rather emulate a real desktop, allowing users have more fun and to be more creative with there desktop as they would be in real life. For example i left my laptop alone in college once and came back to sticky notes all over my desktop (i'll look out the screenshot i have next time i'm on that comp).

Edit:
heres my desktop (don't think forum has automatic resize so linked to the gallery)

and i also found the prototype video on youtube

I love it. Games on one wall, utilities on another, most used stuff on the floor, stuff I hardly use on the back wall. A few pics interspersed about the place. My wife said she didn't want it on her PC cos she didn't want to have another room to clean Made me laugh

Compiz was released by Novell (SUSE) in January 2006, but I didn't know bumptop was around that long.
