When I have an infected computer to fix, I always run these programs:

First scan with these 3 different virusscanners (they all work differently), preferrably in safe mode:

Antivir: http://www.free-av.com
The Cleaner: http://www.moosoft.com
NOD32: http://www.nod32.com

Then scan the system with:
MalwareBytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
Spybot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/home/index.html
Ad-aware: http://www.lavasoft.com

The logfiles Hijackthis creates can be a good help too.

Sweet mate, some of those programs are very good imo.

I also use Spyware Doctor just to double check incase my AVG 8.o hasn't got everything.

+Rep for helpful list.

A certain degree of paranoia can't hurt

personally I prefer the combo Nod32 + spybot search¬destroy + Comodo Firewall

also you can use Kaspersky online scanner to add some extra security.

Comodo firewall is great indeed, the best free firewall available atm imo. If only the virusscanner they offer was a bit better i'd only use the comodo IS package. I dropped Nod since they changed the way they offer their free version and went with Avira as my basic scanner.

The IT company I worked for sold NOD32 for nearly 5 years...and I never knew they had a free version....then again, I've never had to pay for it either....company always provided it for us
