"Active in" in user details + as search criteria

This might be handy as the forum grows...

Im suggestng just another textbox for user cp/user details. It should be filled with games player is currently active in. And make that a search criteria in advanced search page and link to social groups and and and... everything.

When this forum has thousands of gamers, finding members by game could be very useful.

Yea, there is textbox for favorite games, but favorite game might be different than a game you're currently active in, si?

Favorite games and active games certainly are 2 different things. Would be a great addition for when this ofrum is filled with thousands of people.

Good idea, however there is a challenge:

If I add another profile field, one which is searchable on the members list (as is the current "favorite games" field), and make this field a simple text box, members will very likely write the names of their active games differently.

For example one member might write "Call of Duty 5" while another writes "COD5". This will prevent finding some members playing the game you are interested in if the search query is formatted differently.

The other alternative is to make this field a multi-selection menu, with popular current games listed. However this of course would require a lot of time to keep the list current with the hundreds and hundreds of popular games on an ongoing basis.

would it not be possible to do this as a combination of a text box and a selection list as in: You would have a selection list of prepoulated games but if your game is not in the list there is an option to add your game to your list, if a game is added then it would appear in the pre populated selection list. Posibly haver a moderation queue before the additions are made public to prevent abuse. This would be alot more complicated to set up but would be easier to manage in the long term.

How about that ajax widget that fetches alternatives while you type it - like when searchin posts by member - and if no alternative is not found and/or selected, it enters new one? Well, maybe dumb idea requiring extra moderation :S

My goal idea is something like personalized billboard. IMO real value for multigame forum would be the possibility to promote events among not-enough-enthusiastic-members-of-game-X who play game regularly (periodically a lot) but don't spend hours in game X dedicated forums.

I have limited hours to spend on gaming and tbh forum index looks unappealing for me, since I'm mostly interested in peeps that play games that I play myself instead of games belonging to certain genre - tho several candidates for my future timewasters just keep popping up .

So there is kind of lack of "taste of meat".

After *cough* some game is public, I most definetely will have a need to contact fellow players.
