Caesar 3

Loved this game, but it wont run on my XP machines

What is the more up to date equivalent, as I see Caesar 4 has mixed reviews?

Anyone have any experience of Children of the Nile? Same sort of thing?

Firstly have you tried running Caesar III in compatability mode? It works perfectly fine on my XP pc but maybe you need to try running it in Win2k mode which I have to do to get Pharoah running on XP and Vista. If Win2k doesn't work maybe try an earlier one.

Try quitting on auto-install and start the compatibility wizard and and select to use the programme in your cdrom. You may have to disable visual themes as well. Make sure the desktop icon is also set correctly.

I have both Caesar IV and Children of the Nile, but don't like them the same due to the camera angles and zooming and stuff. After playing the 'flat' games it's just not the same.

I can write it out in order of what to do if you like as I kept a copy of instructions for each time I reinstall Pharaoh (which I've just done again)

Ok here goes

  1. If you've installed it before make sure to remove it completely and clear out the Temp folders
  2. Insert CD and quit the auto-run (if it auto-runs ofc)
  3. Open Compatibility Wizard - In XP I believe it's under Start -> Programmes -> Accessories (if not then just use Windows Help and search for Compatibility Wizard
  4. Select "I want to use programme in CDRom"
  5. Select to run in Windows 2000
  6. Check to Disable Visual Themes
  7. Now Install
  8. If you add icon to Desktop make sure to right click and check the settings. This also needs to run in Windows 2000 (or the same version you selected on install) and have Visual Themes disabled
  9. Restart PC and fingers crossed it works! If not try another Windows version to run in

Let me know how you get on. If no luck I may have another workaround

You can often find it in 3for2 boxes in normal gamestores for a solo retail price between 3.99$ to 8.99$ and those are often xp compatible since its a rereleased as "classic" or similar

Mine is supposed to be XP compatible but it still won't run without a workaround. Same with Pharoah and Cleopatra Using the above I can run them on Vista and XP without any problems but it's the only way to get any of them to work.
