.
Almost a year ago I was trying to find some heavy-spec game to purchase in order to test my new Alienware M17 and was scouting a local shop for a high end
FPS game.
Sitting one next to the other, two games stood out from the crowd:
Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3.
Both games had received critical acclaim and both games looked like a party in my pants.
Under the influence of juvenile anxiety I proceeded to purchase Far Cry 2. I payed for it at full retail price.
Was it the right decision?
I absolutely hated the game. One of the worst game ever played. Ever.
From that day I promised myself I would only purchase games at special discounted prices or used at least. I would never spend more than 40 bucks for a game ever again. That's how much Far Cry 2 sucked.
Fallout 3 has been staring at me from the store shelf ever since. Until it went on sale on Steam.
Whilst staring at my screen with hyper salivation I thought to myself :"Award-winning-innovative-graphically-advanced-game-of-the-year-edition Fallout 3 for 20$ on steam!!! Seems like a AWESOME DEAL!"
You know what?
That's just crap.
Put a Pipboy on my Oblivion avatar and throw him in a post atomic Teheran and you have achieved Fallout 3.
Yeah sure, the game is entertaining in some occasions and all, but it's just Oblivion without horses with the addition of guns and mutants and fashionable radiation contamination.
I usually work myself into a conclusion when reviewing a game. But in this occasion there is NOTHING to adore about this game.
Graphically speaking, FO3 is top knotch. Kind of. The graphics are pretty and characters look smooth and silky.
Monsters and
mutants are designed to look
monstery and
mutanty to the least and the enviroment is absolutely.... dull.
Sure, tree textures and water reflections are neat. But there's absolutely nothing to see in Fallout 3.
The enviroment is just copy-and-paste through out the game. We all know it's intentional.. being a post atomic setting and all, but it's just
boring.
Playing the game is satisfying in most parts. But one thing stand out from all other combat aspects.
I would like to discuss about this with the following open letter to Bethesda:
"Dear Bethesda, when people get shot in the head, they are supposed to die.
Regards,
fo0d"
The creative people at Bethesda studios invented the "
Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System" aka V.A.T.S. which allows you to freeze time, select the hitpoints you would like to damage (headshots seem like a good idea) and proceed to a short automatic cutscene starring you and your gun blasting at your enemy's head. Over and over and over again. And over again. Again.
At this point you should be looting his body for keys and ammo.
If only he were dead. Apparently, people in this game have bullet proof skulls. And
explode if shot at random body parts with a semi automatic rifle.
The story line in this game could be awesome.
If I remembered what it was.
Am I the only one forgetting why I am doing certain things in the game? Is it just me or do side missions feel just as important or more important than the main objective of the game?
You'll be walking for so long and fighting so many monsters as you attempt to reach a destination that you'll even forget to change your grandma's diapers as time just flies by.
In conclusion..
..I seriously do not understand why this game has grown such an enormous fan base at all considering that:
- Gameplay: Oblivion but boring.
- Graphics: Oblivion without the lush vegetation.
- Game mechanics: Oblivion with bullet time.
- Storyline: A guy looking for his dad.
Two words: Buy Oblivion. (
or ES III.. seriously)
