Guild Wars

Guild Wars was the first real MMO I played, and I was hooked from the first day I logged in

I has several aspects that set it apart from other games in the genre:

- No monthly fees - you only pay once-off for the purchase of the game

- Most areas (except for common areas like towns and cities) are instanced - meaning that a seperate "version" of the area is created for you and your party to game in, no-one else can interfere.

- There is a level cap at 20, which is easily reached within the first few hours of playing, which virtually eliminates the MMO curse of "grinding", and forces a player to rely on a good skillset and gameplay tactics rather than uber stats. Most items are similarly capped for the same reason.

- PVP and PVE are completely seperate, eliminating random PK-ing and griefing.

- The artistic look and feel of the game are on a level that I haven't experienced elsewhere.

Some of the common complaints about the game:

-Many people dislike the instanced nature of the game.

- The seperation of PVP and PVE is also disagreeable to some gamers.

- After reaching level 20 and gathering all the skills they need there can be a lack of meaningful ways to improve your avatar(s). Arenanet has tried to address this by introducing a system of "titles" that can be achieved, but most of these require significant grind.

All in all though, I love the game, but my largest complaint is that, due to the instanced nature of the game, you need to set aside a reasonable amount of time in order to complete an area or quest. You can't really just log in for 10 mins and achieve anything meaningful, the area will be reset as soon as you log out.

The official site is http://www.guildwars.com/ and work is currently progressing on Guil Wars 2.

So, lets hear what other GW players have to say about the game

Yeah I think some things that I didn't like about that game (didn't play it much, only borrowed from a friend) was that you got seperate areas (didn't feel like a MMO) and that it was such a low lvl roof...

I also really loved GW.

I had a Monk that I had moved through much of the game.

A few positives about GW are:

1. I love how you have to restrict your skill set to just 8 skills. This adds a great deal of strategy to doing combat.
2. The mission system was great - with a primary and secondary objective.
3. A great story line that opened up via the missions.
4. Awesome dreamy graphics.
5. A great Guild vs. Guild system for PVP including the ability to watch GvG battles.
6. Challenges like inventory management and traveling restrictions helped make the game even more fun.

Sadly, I lost my account due to a bad decision. I had a friend in Entropia who wanted to use the account to play for a bit - and they sold some Gold they had on another account using my character - and my account got locked/banned.

Been wanting to get another disc and play another toon. Just really hard to start over.

Ahh, that sucks mate , I dunno what I'd do if my account got wiped.
After started playing I bought the Collectors Editions of Factions and Nightfall, and even forked out $300 to get an unopened copy of the original CE, just so I could get the special emote .

Needless to say I would be heartbroken if something happened to my account.

My primary character is a Hammerwielding Smiter Monk, probably the most impractical build in the game but it sure was fun to play

i've still got it installed on my PC even though i've not played it in ages. My fav character was a necro monk. brilliant addition to any team for the extra backup i could muster.

I suppose i should jump back in to see if i'm still active.

One thing that used to annoy me tho was the loading times and the number of updates, though i'd hope it would have settled down a bit by now.

Yeah, I loved the game so much I went back and bought all the pre-order bonus discs for like $5/each to get whatever bonus items or weapons they had. Plus I had just went through EoTN to get the killer skills that made my monk uber.

Actually, the game uses streaming technology. The load times are only long the first time you visit a zone. Because you are downloading the zone - on subsequent visits the load times should only be seconds.

I'm currently working my way through Prophecies with my Necro. I'm still not sure how I feel about everything being instanced, but the concept is pretty well executed.

I believe I've heard that Guild Wars 2 will be less instanced, so I'm looking forward to it.
