Guild Wars was the first real MMO I played, and I was hooked from the first day I logged in
I has several aspects that set it apart from other games in the genre:
- No monthly fees - you only pay once-off for the purchase of the game
- Most areas (except for common areas like towns and cities) are instanced - meaning that a seperate "version" of the area is created for you and your party to game in, no-one else can interfere.
- There is a level cap at 20, which is easily reached within the first few hours of playing, which virtually eliminates the MMO curse of "grinding", and forces a player to rely on a good skillset and gameplay tactics rather than uber stats. Most items are similarly capped for the same reason.
-
PVP and PVE are completely seperate, eliminating random PK-ing and griefing.
- The artistic look and feel of the game are on a level that I haven't experienced elsewhere.
Some of the common complaints about the game:
-Many people dislike the instanced nature of the game.
- The seperation of
PVP and PVE is also disagreeable to some gamers.
- After reaching level 20 and gathering all the skills they need there can be a lack of meaningful ways to improve your avatar(s). Arenanet has tried to address this by introducing a system of "titles" that can be achieved, but most of these require significant grind.
All in all though, I love the game, but my largest complaint is that, due to the instanced nature of the game, you need to set aside a reasonable amount of time in order to complete an area or quest. You can't really just log in for 10 mins and achieve anything meaningful, the area will be reset as soon as you log out.
The official site is

So, lets hear what other GW players have to say about the game
