Yahoo! Games - Top 10 Controversial Games
|
|
http://videogames.yahoo.com/feature/...l-games/530593
Am I the only one that thinks Yahoo! set the list pretty low?
How can some these games be controversial? I understand most of them but not these:
Resistance: Fall of Man
BioShock
SimCopter
I am sure there would be more controvertial games than these.

The chart is pretty well made I`d say. Doom was very controversial when it came out. Had lots of satanic imagery and so did quake. I remember an old official FAQ from Quake 1 which had this question. "Are you guys satan worshippers?" Reply was "No, we just like pentragrams and number 666".
I also see Postal in the list, which was and still is(Postal2) very controversial.
In Postal you can go on the street and start a random killing rampage, chop of limbs and piss on the bodies. Also has lot of politically incorrect content.
The devs said in their defence that they don`t tell the player to do those things. Players can opt if the want to play like a psycho killer on the loose or just do the story line scenario and be a good boy.
Manhunt is also on the list and that`s one of the most controversial titles also, banned in some countries. Game is focused on executions. The more sadistic you are in executing you victims, the better rewards you get.(forgot exactly how that worked, played it some while back)

Yeah I agree. Some controversial games are mixing from the chart and some less controversial were included. For example Carmageddon was also pretty controversial cos you had to run your car over pedestrians to get points.
If this is not controversial don`t know what is.

I guess just like most issues like this, I might agree that some of these games have ... um ... questionable content, I would not agree to censor them. People worry that video games like these might encourage people to act in real life like this, but ...
BUT
then we'd have to censor all kinds of books movies and tv. Maybe a movie depicts a person committing adultery. Does that mean it's encouraging all of us to do that? Or the 3 stooges ... are we really worried that people are going to go around poking each other in the eye? Or Bugs Bunny? Pretty violent!
It's up to PARENTS ... not teachers or other relatives but parents to teach kids the difference between real life, movies, tv, and video games.

did you read why they said it was controversial though?
the guys kissing thing back in that time in north America would have been a BIG issue.

Regarding the ethics of Bioshock, I could name several off the top of my head that would definetly push it off the list.

I did. There is nothing wrong with two guys kissing and I feel sorry for people that take offence in cases like this.
SimCopter:
SimCopter programmer named Jacques Servin decided to play a bit of a prank by making a few alterations to the game code just before it shipped: on certain dates, scads of shirtless male sprites (dubbed "himbos") would gather in great numbers to hug and kiss.
GTA:
Okay, so maybe it wasn't the coffee as much as the simulated sex mini-game that, through patches or special code software, could be unlocked by persistent gamers. Calling Hot Coffee a significant controversy is an embarrassing understatement; the incident opened the floodgates of video game legislation, resulted in a massive recall and re-rating of San Andreas, and obliterated the 2005 fiscal earnings of Rockstar parent Take 2 Interactive, a blow the company is still reeling from. Maybe they should have ordered tea.
Bully:
Bully's sexual themes also caused a bit of an uproar, particularly the fact that protagonist Jimmy Hopkins was able to kiss certain other boys in the game.
Resistance:
Until, that is, Sony was threatened by the Church of England for featuring Manchester Cathedral without getting permission. Upset over the fact that a holy site was used in a game featuring guns, bullets and alien hordes, the Church demanded a formal apology and that the game be removed from shelves.
BioShock:
BioShock's central moral dilemma - whether or not to harvest "Little Sisters" for the precious material ADAM - that makes it a case study for Ethics majors.
Why are games like Ethnic Cleansing or Super Columbine Massacre not on the list?
Ethnic Cleansing allows the player to run through a ghetto killing black people and Latinos, before descending into a subway system to kill Jews. As the game proceeds, the player reaches the ‘Jewish Control Center’ where Ariel Sharon (former PM of Israel) is directing plans for world domination and you are supposed to kill Sharon to win the game.
The game follows Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold through Columbine High School on April 20, 1999, the date of the Columbine shootings.
And why is it worse to have a hidden mini sex game in GTA than running around killing random people?

How are they judging this I wonder?
I totally agree with the comments about parents. We made the mistake of letting our son play WWF Smackdown on the PS2 which he then decided to practice irl on his sisters so that's controversial in that scenario and a lesson learned by all involved
I can't really think of an objective slant on "most controversial".
