What does Sandbox mean

I see it referred to as maybe a training area for new players before they are released into the main game.

But then I see Planet Calypso refer to it as well in this from their website..

"Planet Calypso is a completely unique sandbox MMORPG with a real economy"

So, what does sandbox mean?

According to Wikipedia: "A game with nonlinear gameplay presents players with challenges that can be completed in a number of different sequences. Whereas a more linear game will confront a player with a fixed sequence of challenges, a less linear game will allow greater player freedom. For example, a nonlinear game may permit multiple sequences to finish the game, a choice between paths to victory, or optional side-quests and subplots. Some games feature both linear and nonlinear elements, and some games offer a sandbox mode that allows players to explore the game environment independently from the game's main objectives."

So EU is a sandbox game because there is no clear progression along a character class-line to reach the end goals... you can do whatever you want in whatever order you want to do so. Eve Online would fall into this same category, as would Second Life, Afterworld, etc. Usually skill-based games are considered sandbox, whereas class-based games are not.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Maduro - makes sense

But why does SL have a "sandbox area" for new arrivals - or have I got the terminology wrong?

Or in simple Stinky understandable terms....
It is a place where you do whatever you want. There are no quests or misssions that you MUST do, you make your own games. Much like kids do in a sandbox.

I think....

We use sandboxes on our web collaboration sites.

Basically, they are duplicate versions of the live environment but you can play around in them and if you cock something up or get it wrong you don't cause system problems cost it's only for training, experimenting and testing stuff.

Also, our web sandboxes have no cat shit in them.

This is my understanding of it, too. Like in a sandbox, you are in an enclosed area where you can build non-permanent stuff, knock it down and rebuild something else with no consequences to the real world.

Maybe MA is telling us that EU is only a test platform for their real products to come?

Grand Theft Auto 3 was one of the first sandbox games I can remember playing.

You can progress along the storyline, but the option is always there to just nick a car and go joyride along the beach for example.

Most MMO's are sandbox for this very reason.

Not only is a sandbox game a "do anything" type game, but it can also include games where you just drop right into gameplay.

Good examples of sandbox games:

The Sims
SimCity
Sim-Anything really
Sins of a Solar Empire
Morrowind
Oblivion
Fallout3
Trackmania
SecondLife (That's about as sandbox as you can get)
EVE
etc.

OK, cheers all, got the gist of what this blooming term means now

It is meant to describe games where kiddies play in sand.

Without rules.
