MMORPGs are often classified by being 'sandbox' or 'themepark', where the latter describes most MMORPGs: quests make most MMORPGs very linear (although you can ignore the quests, you have to follow the questline to get to endgame). quests make sure you see all the game while you progress, just as the layout of a themepark makes sure you visit all rides while walking a day around.
sandbox-mmorpgs have no quest-line and give you full control over your actions and descisions ingame.

so, most MMORPGs are themepark-type, the sandbox-type MMORPGs are quite rare..

generally, every computergame where you follow a story is 'themepark' and the ones where you have to plan your day yourself are 'sandbox'.. that's the way i understand the terminology..
