Have you ever played a game that was great that never 'made it' as a blockbuster?
|
|
Before Guitar Hero and Rock Band, Harmonix made two games for PS2 called Frequency and Amplitude. These were the precursor to the whole "music game" genre.
They are two extremely tight games and a boatload of fun which can be found in bargain bins, but they are getting tough to find.
Another that I have played was called Fantavision, which was basically a firework display simulator...that's really the best way I can put it, but again, a boatload of fun.
OOO Another was Darwinia and Multiwinia, TONS OF FUN!

I would say "Rez"
So I'll say "Rez"
People say "What? Not heard of that one"
Rez is one of the most original games I have ever played but didn't get much exposure and relatively few people have played it. It is an "on rails" shooting game in which the player makes the music based on how well they are doing, it has 5 stages, huge boss battles at the end of each level and some unlocks.
Gallery doesnt appear to work in same way as EF does so:

Read loads about how good Rez was.... on my list of games/systems to get from computing history, along with Ico
I'd cite Call Of Juarez as a great game, but it's let down by slow loading and unnecessary cut-scenes.
For a package, and for a launch title, Die Hard Trilogy on the PsOne was hard to beat; even at the end of the PsOne's life they hadn't made much to compete with it.

Vanguard.
It is a great world that was plagued from the start with a buggy beta, buggy release, buggy updates. Lag. Lots of negativity in various forums from folks unhappy with the state of the game at release and for the year thereafter as well. It turned out to be a cool world and decent game, but never achieve what it set out to be - EQ3.
For me playing Vanguard, there was always a little something that was missing and that nagged me, but I could never really put a finger on what it was. Any feedback from other Vanguard players? Maybe it was the lack of server population, maybe it was a lack of quality interaction with npc's... not sure.

I'll say "The Clue" by Neo Software.
Most Americans seem to think i mean cluedo, but No.
The clue is a Burglary Sim. and was followed with a sequal called "The Sting" many years later.
I first got a demo of the game with an edition of CU Amiga, but after months of searching for a retail version i gave up looking for it knowing there was no chance of buying a copy.
Then by chance, a number of years later, a friend gave me a CD with a number of games on it. One of these games just happened to be a PC version of The Clue.

I still have my DC hooked up, and it boots burned discs so I might have to try to track down a copy of that game.
