PVP in MMO Games

OK my turn to ask a question as a lot of others seem to be doing it.
Bring on the post farming hehe

I have a few questions really that involve PVP in MMO games.

Background:
With regard to online gaming I have really only had significant experience in Entropia Universe and enjoy some pk action in there sometimes but mainly amongst friends or just messing around in the ring.
The whole idea of lootable pvp 3 and 4 I find interesting and exciting, however due to slow ping rates from my area in Australia and lag I generally dont perform as well as I should in there.
That combined with the amount of time spent doing nothing really when I could be skilling hardcore makes it seem like a waste of time tbh.
There are other games out there I believe that have more of a pvp focus, Eve online is one I have been told about.

Main Questions:
Are there any other games out there with similar mechanics/controls to EU but with more pk focus?
Do these games have the same difficulties/expenses associated with getting your ava up to the skills and equipment level required to be any good?

If so what are they and where, what are the fees? etc

The main reason I am asking for this info is to research other games as more of a sandbox training arena where I can be anonymous as well as try something else a little challenging and different.
FPS games with similar themes, objectives and controls I would see as good too.

All opinions and advice are appreciated.

Not sure how similar the mechanic side is but FEAR has a free download of their multiplayer component. So the start up cost is nil. You can download it and jump on a map and working on your skills. The download is just over 1GB and totally free. Fill out the registration and they will email you a code.

You can thank Mikass for finding that.

711 has a thread that might have a few more options for you:

PVP in Age of Conan is excellent. I havent played in a while but I had alot of fun. It requires alot of skills both ingame and IRL. You can also do Guild vs Guild wars where you can try to destroy your enemys Guild Town.

PvP in Star Wars Galaxies used to be great until SoE fucked up the game autumn 2004. It was great fun to do basewars with my unlocked jedi even though it sucked losing xp and rank points each death

Some of my fondest memories of that was the insane lag once where I thought no one was defending the enemy base so ran straight in and then noticed over 100people popping out of nowhere around me due to lag and me being dead in 0,8seconds

Tried this on release last year and although the graphics and sound were great at the time, quite frankly the linear quest based crap got old real quick.

Might have another look later this year and change to a pvp server if I can.

EVE has pretty intense pvp. Complex strategies, and it actually bears concequence. Similar to pvp 3 + 4, but obviously without the real world value.

And, if you really want to get into pvp, but dont wanna keep going into low sec (basically pvp alllowed) zones, i suppose you could always sign up for one of the 4 racial navies.

Well... EVE has a ton of PVP, but it is completely 100% different from Entropia. It is a lot more about strategy than actual shooting. I suppose the closest EU would come is if you do pvp in 3rd person mode. Even at that, it is still quite different.

Of the games that I've played in the last few years:

EU - The pvp is ok, but is either limited to the ring or pvp zones that are really for elite players only. I'd give it 2 stars for pvp.

Eve Online - This is an awesome game for pvp as it can occur nearly everywhere and is completely free form as to the scenario. Definitely a 5-star pvp game.

LOTRO - Meh... it was ok for pvp, but was certainly not the focus of the game. It seemed like an afterthought project that was not given full attention of anybody. 3 starts though for fun for what's there.

Warhammer - It is a pvp and rvr (realm vs. realm) game. However, for pvp you run the same scenarios over and over and over again, which gets to be a grind. RvR is better in WAR as it involved attacking keeps and towns. To get to an effective level for RvR though, you have to be higher levels... there just isn't as much RvR at the lower levels. 4 stars for Warhammer pvp.

Second Life - Lol, you can actually pvp in SL. I wouldn't bother though... 1 star.

WoW - Well, it does have some decent pvp in the larger scenarios, but the smaller ones get tedious and grindy. 3 stars as well.

Afterwold - PvP almost everywhere. The whole game is pretty much pvp, but since it's still in alpha there isn't as much pvp as there will be upon release. 4 stars for potential.

Runes of Magic - This is a decent fantasy MMO that was recently released, and supposedly has decent pvp. I won't rate it since I didn't actually pvp in it.

Of course, there are a lot of games that are solely pvp based. My favorite of these is Global Agenda. 4.5 stars for their pvp.

Also, Darkfall is supposed to have some great pvp, but I haven't checked it out yet.
