The Downsides to Digital Distribution
|
|
The gaming industry's ongoing shift from physical media to direct downloads has made buying new titles much more convenient, and in some cases cheaper. However, as this article in The Escapist notes, there are downsides as well, such as an increased dependence on console makers and the inability to sell your used games. Quoting: "Microsoft and Sony might end up charging publishers an arm and a leg to enable game downloads, especially as they gain more and more control over distribution. Think about it: What if, 10 years from now, 50 percent of software sales for Microsoft's latest console come through Xbox Live? Or, in an even scarier scenario for consumers, what if there is no physical media drive at all, and everything goes through Xbox Live? Sony's marriage to the Blu-ray format ensures its continued support of game discs, but Microsoft has no such restrictions. They could cut console production costs and take control over the entire supply chain in one fell swoop. There would be zero room for publishers to negotiate anything in such a de facto monopoly. The perfect comparison is Wal-Mart. As the world's largest retailer, Wal-Mart is able to demand pretty much whatever it wants of suppliers because it grants access to such large numbers of consumers."

It's possible it might but there are other gaming platforms out there. Microsoft only own one console which the article seems to have neglected to factor.

On other note there are rumors of MS taking over EA, it will be hell for the gaming industry if MS really takes over EA. It will be too much of a monopoly, but they both suit each other as both charge their customers too much for their inferior products.

Yes I assume it would just get worse if they became the one company. Lets hope that one is stopped from happening or the rumours are just that.

Monopoly aye? I'll buy 4th Avenue please?
But seriously, monopoly is a bad thing. It screws up the market and the monopolers can sell what ever crap they like for nearly any price and have it bought, just like a franchise name can make somethign a instant big seller. Monopoly makes it hard for someone trying to make an honest buck to make it, yes the world is harsh, but a monopoly is the worst you can do, it means you have money, but not the quality you should have.
And as Marie said, the article neglected factors of other consoles. If my Xbox became Live dependant I would kick it out and bring the Playstation in. Microsoft can try and buyout what they want, but it will either
A. Not happen like Blk said.
or
B. Will get them screwed over in the long run.
Reson for that is because after a while people will notice a decline in quality and custome service and will leave the products to collect dust as they move onto someone else who is small in the business relatively. Which in turn ruins the point of the monopoly.

Yes you can but only when there is no monopoly. How many games can you buy for non-Windows systems, not many, so virtually Windows is a monopoly. Of course there are some games for other systems but not enough and varied to make any impact.
So if MS buys EA then they make a lot of games exclusive to MS, so you have to go with MS and no other way. But this is not going to happen and it is so wrong on a lot of levels.
If this deal does go through then it will be [MS,EA] vs [Sony,Sega,Nintendo,Capcom,Konami,Square Enix etc...]. It will virtually be a West vs. East, get ready for the Third World War, who knew it will be because of gaming
