Cheats

I have always had mixed feelings about using cheat codes etc. They feel like, well, cheating. But this is such a harsh word. But as the makers of the games actually include the bloody things in their games, they are a bona fide part of gaming...

And talking about single player stuff, not exploits and hacks for online pvp stuff.

Do you use them? I must admit that I have. Usually, I will play a game through without them, then have a look to see what is around, and play the game through again with revenge on my mind

The last game I played using any "cheat codes" was Carmaggedon II on my old PII

It was fun to go on a rampage every once in a while or just to complete a "boss level" quickly when I didn't have the frame of mind to complete it properly

I think they add a new fun dimension to some games as you can play a completely different tactic and then try and implement it in to your normal gameplay.

I suppose the ones I am most guilty of using are in games like Stronghold and Age of Empires - getting myself more resources and money to develop my castle whatever more quickly.

And then wait for the enemy to "come an ave a go if they think they're hard enough"

I only used to cheat with spore. Somehow they fucked up the game completely and made it not really enjoyable till some player made a nice cheatsheet. Then spore got revamped and the cheats were obviously not working anymore but at least we can wait now, I think till July, for a nice patch to make the game worthwhile after all.

Other than that I don't cheat, I want to win, etc... without cheating

The only game I played 100% on a "rigged" game was Megalomaniac on the Amiga

I sucked at it big time playing it properly and would only enjoy playing with cheats active. Without cheats I would never have played it so I guess having the cheat option on that game wasn't without it's merits.

Not really played any single player games for years prefer playing against human as they are much more unpredictable. The only single player game i play now and then is Sim City 4. I do use the god mode cheat in that, but it only allows me to change the landscape for free so not really cheating imo. I have used the cheat to inject cash but i found that actually ruined the game for me.

Games like UT that have single player mode that allow you to unlock characters i prefer to play vanilla at least once. Although after ive completed it once and reinstall i just change the .ini because i cant be bothered to do it again.

Valve games like Team Fortress or CounterStrike have the capability to use scripts in the config (cfg) files. Some people consider them cheating, but as Valve intended them to be used and anyone can use them some people think they are just part of the game. I guess the debate will never end on that lol. I certainly use some simple scripts during TF2 games to enhance my gameplay.

I only cheat if there are any fun cheats, or if it is more convenient

Examples include:
Oni and Max Payne - Play as any character at that level (although in MP the game crashed after a while of doing that)

Guitar Hero - So I get all the songs in Quick Play-mode... after completing the game career mode already though

Morrowind/Oblivion - Fortify Speed cheat when I have to go really long distances

Star Wars: Jedi Outcast - Immortality (always fun as a jedi), lightsaber color (I wanna have orange ), spawn enemies, give all weapons (fun on the early maps heh)

ya know, stuff like that...

i'll generally uses cheats and trainers once i've completed the storyline of a game so i can go back and find stuff i couldn't be bothered with at the start.

I used to love mucking about with the ini files of command and conquer for instance and changing the weapons that units had of units that the factions had in order to see what sort of balance i could get.

After ending the game without cheats I usually try out the ones that could give the game some more fun, but that won't make it easier persé (like the example I saw posted above, simcity4 > godmode, to change landscape without costs).
