I used to be the guy who always built my own PC.

But after looking at the cost i realized that it's A LOT cheeper to get a refurbed gateway from tigerdirect and then just upgrade it later as needed.

I bought mine 2 years ago for under 500 and havn't needed to upgrade it yet.

Instead got my wife her own system including a 20" monitor with slightly better stats then mine for 600$

came with windows which when you do stuff legally and need it to play entropia and other windows only software saves you over 100$ cause they pretty much give it to you for free.

i hear newegg.com is good to if your in the states.

Actually, we have TigerDirect stores here and they just bought out CompUSA. Newegg.com is decent and Frys Electronics stores are incredible. Even Bestbuy has been offering some gaming pcs.

Awww its closed already! I would have answered "Have my pet geek make one for me!" of course.

The rig Im currently on was built by some dude at a computer store here, but ever since I bought it I kept getting bluescreen when some items (webcam, ipod) was plugged into my usb ports. And even if the guy checked it and all, we just couldn't fix it.
Until my pet geek, 2 1/2 years later, vacuums my PC, and miraculously it doesnt bluescreen anymore So I feel safe if I ask him to build it. He fix things even when he doesnt intend to

Cost wise this depends on how much you value your own time as building from scratch to get a good system takes masses of research on what the best hardware is for the money and wether it is compatible with the rest of the system. Poorly compatiblehardware can take rediculous amounts of resources to work. then add on the build time and possibly the time taken to make it actually work or replace DOA hardware and the non OEM OS costs which can be considerably higher. This often actually removes any advantage from building the system yourself other than the pride you have in your machine when it is built by your own hands.
