The evolution of the game engine

I found this image while researching the Quake engine tree, and thought I would share. It's a good visual to where things have come from over the last 10 years.

Yeah, it is quite amazing how fast some game engines have developed to this level of quality in visual.

It is always nice to see comparisons to the older versions of a game engine for just that reason.

But remember, gamplay>graphics.
But graphics do help suade me a bit.

It is pretty cool seeing comparisons like that, when the graphics improve in an evolutionary way I dont always notice just how much they have improved. I am often surprised when I go back to my N64 at how comparitivley bad the graphics are and how unrsponsive the controls are while I remember that console being the Mutts Nuts at the time. This is even true going back just one console generation.

Indeed it is. Check out the Sony Bravia RL Ad vs a copy of it rendered with Cryengine2. It`s not so easy to tell which is which.

Heck, I'd prefer the CE-2 add than the RL one on TV!

Fail Whale:
Yes, the N64 was the best thing back then but when ya look back you go, "Crap, that's how bad the graphics were?" when you remember them being awesome.

Wow yeah the only difference I can see isw the vibrancy of the colour but that could just be choice by the designers

I've never seen the CE2 render of that commercial, is there an HD version somewhere? That's really cool.
