Tools for hobbyists

i'd like to list tools for the hobby-game-dev (like me) who don't want to pay expensive licenses and is not really forced to use the latest technology in gfx and phisycs.

my choices:

3d-game engine:

Panda 3D: a really good 3d-game-engine for very quick developing, but still able to make fully professional games. requires you to program (in C++ or python). originally developed by disney. MIT-license (free for private and commercial use).

networking:

pyRakNet: python API for RakNet

programming language:

Python: propably THE best language to get into programming, for much to many reasons to list here..

please post your tools/engines of choice in this thread, let's make a comprehensive list

Well for hobbyists i'd have to say

Microsoft's XNA Games Studio
And Anim8or

For students i'd remind them that Microsoft offers alot of free software for download on their dreamspark site

I just found this today Adventure game studio
lets you design your own game with little or no programming experience
http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/
Games made with this will have a vintage 90's sierra feel to them

i have to mention blender here, it's still number one choice for free 3d software.. can do just about anything, therefore the learnig-curve is a bit steep..

HEHE cool lil software. how "legal" would be to use Entropia screenshots to create a game with this engine?
