Have an idea for a game....
|
|
I have had an idea for a game in the back of my mind for ages now.
A particular section of history kinda game, spanning about 30 years.
It is a rampaging tale of bravery, backstabbing, vision and foresight. And it actually happened, moulding the political and demographical makeup of an entire continent.
How would one go about approaching a game developer with a concept? Would you single out developers that have done similarish things in the past and pitch it to them.
Just kicking around thoughts and it would be a wonderful thing to play this tale, hopefully with other real people playing separate roles in the tale. This would then add the possibility of "changes" in the course of recorded history, and could lead to wildly different scenarios and "endings" to this moment in time.
I dunno, all pie in the sky stuff. Do any of you have or had notions like this, and if so, has any of you followed through with anything, and how????

I would find some passionate college guys/girls with some coding experience. Recruit some artist people and go to work making a working prototype.
At the same time write out a series of short novels (or long chapters) explaining the backstory and projecting into the future.
When that is all polished - I would approach a game dev company with the story, the art, and the working prototype.
You gotta remember, it costs millions to develop a game. Any game company will want more than an idea to base their decision on.

Also think of it like a movie script. You can't really walk into Paramount with an idea... you have to take them a script. In the gaming world, that script may also come with some concept art and some sample storyboards.
I agree with Thoreau that Walden Pond sounds very relaxing... no, wait... different Thoreau. But our Thoreau here hit the nail on the head with getting some college guys/girls involved. You can either make it an indy game, do much of the production yourselves, and then publish it. Or, you can sell the project to a larger publisher sometime in Alpha or Beta. Or, you guys can program up some basic test areas and sell the project early to another company. There really can be a lot of freedom with the right game concept.
Good luck to you!
BTW, PM me if you want to chat further about it and I may be able to help a bit

so you are talking about a massive online history-simulation?
this sounds like a very interesting idea, maybe more scientific than gaming, actually..
just be aware that it would also be a massive amount of work.. it will be very hard to convince professionals to do such an amount of work for free.. and hobbyists are likely to drop out sooner or later..
my strategy for such a venture would be: start programming very small games and learn. team up with a nice and good coder and make some small 'real' games. if you cannot learn to code well, learn to do the artwork.. after all you have alot of work to share.. try publishing some games and get them into your portfolio. such a portfolio could open the way to get employed as designer by a company.. work your career until you are lead-designer, then convince the managment of your idea. now you have a powerful development-team, a marketing-section and several M$ to work with, and can finally make a massive-multiplayer history-simulation.

That does indeed sound quite intriguing kind safara, do you have any plans to embark upon this, and indeed create this game of yours?
It does indeed sound quite promising.
Post Scriptum
I am quite sorry for all corruptions this post may suffer from due to drunkenness..
