For people worried that they may be accused of illegally sharing "The Hurt Locker," a movie about defusing bombs, wow powerleveling service the hope was that efforts to chase them down would fizzle out.

No such luck. The film's producers are finally moving to acquire the names of people they accuse of sharing this year's "Best Picture" winner on peer-to-peer sites. Qwest Communications on Monday notified a customer in Denver that the Internet service provider has received a subpoena from lawyers representing Voltage Pictures, the production company that made "The Hurt Locker."

"It is our company policy to notify our customer when we have received a subpoena requesting their records in civil matter," Qwest informed the customer, who contacted CNET on Thursday and asked to remain anonymous. "As required by law, to the extent we have these records we will furnish the records on or before September 30, 2010."

Voltage Pictures is just one of at least a dozen indie studios that are participating in an antipiracy campaign spearheaded by the Washington, D.C., law firm of Dunlap, Grubb & Weaver.cheap wow leveling Unlike the major film studios, smaller production companies don't have the resources to finance antipiracy operations. DGW offers to do it for them by filing copyright complaints on their behalf and in exchange takes a cut of whatever fees the suits generate.

DWG representatives were not immediately available for comment.

Landing Voltage Pictures as a customer was a coup for DGW. "The Hurt Locker" has lifted the firm's profile with indie studios, the media, and the file-sharing community. Some members of the latter category are shaken by the threat of lawsuits. The days when entertainment companies filed copyright complaints against individuals were supposed to have ended when the music industry stopped filing suits in December 2008, or so it appeared.

The long-running turn-based strategy series returns with an updated look, story, and gameplay mechanics.

Though it was just recently announced, Might & Magic VI Heroes (notice the name change) is on display at Gamescom in Germany in the form of a very brief demo. But before jumping into that we got some background on the game in development at Black Hole Entertainment. The first thing we were told about was the story, which takes place 400 years before the events that transpired in Heroes of Might & Magic V. Members of Ubisoft demoing the game said that the story won’t follow the typical fantasy outline of a young boy who sees his family killed and takes up arms against those responsible. Rather, Might & Magic VI’s story will be a bit more complex than that, revolving around five brothers and sisters who chose very different paths in life that will ultimately be reflected in how their individual campaigns pan out. Ubisoft representatives even went so far as to say that the game’s story would have more in common with something like A Song of Ice and Fire series of books.

As for the gameplay, the development team has spent a lot of time refining and attempting to perfect the formula that has made Might & Magic such a fan favorite over the years. In fact, Ubisoft and Black Hole Entertainment even setup a special message board for VIP fans of the previous games to discuss what they would like to see improved or changed for Heroes VI. For example, many people complained that the 3D in Heroes V made it difficult to see items and other objects, so that has seemingly been addressed already for VI.

But one of the bigger changes we know about so far deals directly with resource management. All resources are linked to castles in Heroes VI, so if someone chooses to attack a castle and win, they automatically get all of the resources tied to it as opposed to just fighting for a single resource--over and over. Additionally, once in possession of a castle, you can decide what you want to do with it--you can convert it completely to your class (for example, if you’re a necromancer, then the castle changes accordingly), or decide things like how it can defend itself. When engaged in turn-based combat on the battle maps, you’ll see an initiative bar that shows you the attack order (units can only have one action per round). Hero characters will also have special faction capabilities and there will be alternative objectives for some battles that may require you to do things like rescue a specific character or just survive. Also, 40-percent of the creatures per faction will be entirely new and there are also two whole factions that have yet to be revealed. And finally, the last bit of gameplay info we gleaned from the demo is that there will be boss battles. We didn’t get to see one in action, but we did get to see the cinematic leading up to a confrontation with what appeared to be some kind of water dragon.

Even at such an early state Might & Magic Heroes VI looks quite detailed (the new jungle tile set look especially impressive) and it seems like the foundation for the gameplay is well in place. Of course, we’re curious as to how it plays given that there seem to be so many relatively minor modifications--most of which we don’t even know about quite yet. It’s also nice to see a continued effort towards making games like Might & Magic a bit more accessible through user-interface customization (deciding which spells you want immediately accessible and where). We’ll have more on this and other details before the game’s release in 2011 for the PC.

While we’ve already seen New York city torn apart in Crysis 2, we’ve yet to get some hands-on time with the futuristic first-person shooter. However, at this year’s Gamescom developer Crytek let us loose on a new multiplayer build, allowing us to get a feel of the shooting, and experience humiliating defeat at the hands of the developers.

Before we were let loose on a map, we given some details about the multiplayer. The team behind it consists of over 70 people at Crytek UK, containing many of the same people that worked on the acclaimed Timesplitters. There will be six game modes, though we were only able to get our hands on two were unveiled; Team Instant Action and Alien Crash Site. While Team Instant Action is standard team-deathmatch fare, Alien Crash Site is a new twist on a capture-the-flag style gameplay. An alien ship fires a drop pod onto a location on the map. The two opposing teams then try and clear the drop site of hostiles, and then defend it from the other team.

Like the single-player, the multiplayer maps are set in a post apocalyptic vision of New York. The first is Rooftop Gardens, which is set on top of a skyscraper, giving you plenty of room to jump around and snipe enemies. The second is Impact, which is set in two buildings that have crashed together, creating a mish-mash of of stairwells and concrete rubble. Before each match you can choose to play as one of five preset classes, as well as build up customs ones. There are 80 ranks to work through, which Crytek estimates will take around 80 hours to unlock. You can also use nanosuit modules to customise your character, improving attributes such as agility and stealth.

We jumped into an Alien Crash Site match, playing as a regular solider. The first thing that struck us was the detail in the environment, with piles of rubble, broken walls, and a distant New York skyline line all visible from the rooftop. An marker let us know where the alien drop ship was about to deploy, which we could also see in the sky on the rooftop level. We headed down to the drop site, only to be greeted by a mass of aliens, ready to send us swiftly back to where we came from. Though AI controlled, the aliens acted intelligently, hiding behind cover, and flanking us to gain the advantage. Though we were able to dispatch them, the opposing team then appeared and promptly laid waste to our team.

                         Big men with big guns.

After respawning we attempted to exact our revenge and headed back to the drop site. We took advantage of our nano suit’s special abilities, which were armor and stealth. Armor increased our defenses, allowing us to withstand long barrages of bullets, while stealth activated a Predator-style cloaking device. Both were powered by a limited energy supply represented by a small meter at the bottom of the screen, which recharged slowly as we played. As we made our way to the drop site, we how fast the game felt, allowing us to quickly spin around and take out multiple enemies. Shooting felt satisfying, with our rifle having a nice amount of recoil, requiring us to shoot in short bursts. The usual shooter mechanics of aiming down the sight, crouching to steady our weapon, and pistol whipping melee attacks were all present and correct, as well as an enhanced jumping ability which allowed us to jump higher and climb up ledges. None of this mattered though, as the superior abilities of the developers left us in constant pools of blood on the floor as we suffered the humiliation of defeat. Crysis 2 is our March 22 2011 in North America, and March 25 2011 in Europe. Check gamescom.gamespot.com for more of our coverage from Cologne.

While the name of the game does share the word "spore," one thing that Maxis wanted to make clear was that this is not a sequel or an expansion pack for the PC game Spore, which was released two years ago. The idea for Darkspore spawned before Spore was even finished, and the new action role-playing game is meant to leverage the powerful editor that was created for Spore. Darkspore is a hack-and-slash RPG that is similar to Diablo but with a sci-fi theme instead of the traditional fantasy setting. We went down to EA at Redwood Shores to get some hands-on time with the game and found it to be easily accessible and quite fun when played with up to four players cooperatively online.

The area we were placed in was called Cryos, a planet with floating ice fields over plasma. Before visiting any new planet, you'll be able to check out what kind of non-player characters are going to be there and what kind of abilities they have. Each planet is vastly different from the others, so it's crucial to see what you're going up against and pick the best team to bring with you. We were able to play cooperatively with three other people and had our three creatures already picked out for us. Instead of playing through a game with just one hero, Darkspore focuses on a collection of heroes, so that you have plenty of variety and can create the best possible team before checking out a new planet. As we saw in our previous preview, the game will have five different creature types, each with its own resistances. Every hero that you play as will be unique, as you can customize it based on all the pickups you get as you progress through the game.

The controls are really easy, and if you are at all familiar with hack-and-slash PC games, then this should be a no-brainer. To move your creature, you left click anywhere on the ground and attack by pointing and clicking vigorously on an enemy. Numerical hotkeys are lined up for you to use your special abilities, which are unique to each creature. We played around with a stun attack, chain lightning, and a bubble shield, which came in handy when we faced the world's boss. You have an ammunition bar that drains, so you can't spam these abilities forever. Some of these abilities can only be used if all the members of your squad are alive, so it's important to pay close attention to your health. Using the Q, W, E keys, you can quickly swap out members of your team when your health is running low--but be warned that some foes can use an ability that prevents you from switching. As you pick up healing items, your entire squad will heal together, so you'll be as good as new in no time. There is a major focus on loot in Darkspore, so as you slash your way through, there will be plenty of items to pick up and catalysts to buff your heroes.

Our squad was like a balanced variety pack. We had one creature with long strong limbs that was a powerful melee fighter, a multiple-legged creature that was fast and nimble, and to round out the party, a flying buglike member that attacked from a distance. This came in handy when we faced the boss, which would constantly summon little critters that left a trail of flames in their wake. It was crucial to work together with the other players because the boss had a tendency to send its lasers after one person. Another thing to pay attention to is what kind of creature you're fighting against because you may need to swap characters if you're facing an enemy that is resistant to a particular creature type.

Yes, we get lasers too.

While our time with Darkspore was brief, we did get a feel of how the game will work. As far as control goes, it's fairly straightforward, making it accessible to a wider audience. There seem to be plenty of things to do that we haven't been able to fully explore yet, like finding out what kind of power-ups we can pick up and play with and customizing our own creature. We'll be sure to update you with more information as soon as it becomes available. Darkspore is set to ship sometime next year.
