I think for some people of there is an addiction its possible also for the social side fo things especially with MMo's. They attract quite a few players that have part time jobs or no jobs during owrk hours which is when friends in rl arn't around so i suspect in quite a few cases its the social side of things.
I also played and still occasionally play the MMo puzzle pirates and I know for several years the majority of the people I was friends with in that game only logged in to say hi to people and chat about life and the game. They weren't actually doing much playing of the game at all and it's still the case if we all log in together.
