Before anyone dreamed of orcs being born from the earth mankind was looking up to the stars and fantasizing about the skys.

We humans have always moved up and out. Our very nature is to explore. Humanity would continue to exist if tomorrow every tale of dragons and elfs vanished from our libraries. But take away the hope of the heavens, take away the dreams of one day moving beyond this pale blue dot, and we would die by the morning.

Science Fiction, or better put, Science Dreaming, is what we all share. It isn't part of our collective conscious. It is our collective conscious.

Me too, probably because of huge dose of sci-fi since 10 years old or so.
Fantasy never hit me, always found it...childish and simple I guess, whereas sci-fi's new ideas, tech, science, logic and also moral dilemmas hit me like a ten ton hammer.
World needs good sci-fi games more than same old "Look at me, I'm an Elf!!!111!!!".

Man, I love where this discussion is going. I grew up on high fantasy, but I always sought out the more technology-rich fantasy. I started getting into sci-fi about five years ago and have found myself being more and more drawn to sci-fi than to fantasy. Fantasy is good for a break from reality, but sci-fi is more like planning for the future. Thoreau mentioned science dreaming... I'd call it science-planning. Those scientists who grew up on sci-fi have used it as not as fiction as much as a loose guide to future technology. Hell, I imagine many generations past me living in Calypso-like colonies and running madly from Atrox-like space beasties. Looking at sci-fi like it's a future reality is both entertaining and terrifying. How many of us were (are still) freaked out by the underlying concepts of The Matrix? I don't get freaked out by elves and dwarves... On the other hand, I do still like a good fantasy MMO from time to time.

science fiction is what keep us moving forward. Check some of the works of jules verne, they were science fiction in his time and nowdays we have a lot of what he wrote as a very common reality.

This will hapen with todays scinece fiction too, at least with most of it. That is the importance of the genere and that is why it is 100 times better than fantasy. It let us dream with the things that will come.

Elves suck

Ok, who wants to get together and start building the Phoenix? Screw Zefram Cochrane....I want warp travel now...

Or maybe we should be out digging in Egypt looking for a big ring. Or Antartica has one too...unless the government already found it...then we're f$%@#ed.
