rss Thai Gaming Sites Ordered Shut Down After Suicide

eldavojohn writes "Seventy-two websites have been ordered shut down by the courts in Thailand following the suicide of a 12-year-old boy who jumped from the sixth story of his school after his father banned him from playing computer games. This brings more action from the court: 'Some websites are rumored to take in over 100 million baht from online betting a night at peak periods, causing huge economic losses to the country. To prevent online gambling, the DSI, also a member of the internet safety committee, would notify all Internet service providers across the country about the court order. From now on, any provider found to encourage or provide online gambling will not only face a jail term and a fine, but also have his/her ISP license revoked by the ICT.' Thailand is no stranger to internet censorship of various sites."

Well, this is an awful subject.

I find it annoying that kids around my age will go well over the top when something like a game is banned.

SO F**KING WHAT?!

It's a game, you can live without a game for a while can't you? It's no the end of the world.

The fact that he even had the chance to jump off the roof or out the window is beyond me, you'd think his friends (if any), a classmate or even a teacher would have stopped him.

bleh.

Parents need to stop putting computers in kids rooms. Be part of your kids gaming play with them watch them. Too many parents use computers as a babysitter. Parents by kids video games and don't even read what they are about.

I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but it your kid is addicted to video games thats YOUR FAULT!

I have a 5 year old daughter and at times i can see she will even get addicted to television. I can see her even get fustrated and emotional with silly kid sites like webkinz. It's MY RESPONISBILITY to get her doing something else that can even be fun. Take her outside ride on a bike goto a park read a book play a board game.

These stupid parents go oh #&*# we have a problem just cut him/her off and then wonder why there kid goes berserk and does stupid things just piss me off. GET A CLUE! Your the one that let them get to that point because you aren't watching them.

I agree Rex, although I do it is also *partially* the child's fault as they are the on attaching their life to the games ever so much.

Yes, yes, people would say I do the same with these forums, I could leave anytime I wanted, I could leave games anytime I wanted. If I was banned, boo-hoo, I'll go and live on.

I try not to say this as though as I don't have to do a thing, but parents need to take responsibility of their child's welfare, if you can't, why did you have a child?

This also reminds me of the talk on the German Govt. banning paintballing.

This is just stupid on all levels. The fact the kid killed himself and also the over reaction of banning all gamblimg sites.

This world is sooooooooooooo fucked up at times!
