Yeah, always worth playing the free games a bit before trying out the cash games. There's quite a lot of subtlety in the King games, you need to design a strategy based around how the scoring works rather than around what feels natural (sometimes works out the same, sometimes not). And of course, lots of practice!
Not to mention obvious things, like using a nice big screen, using a good keyboard and mouse (I use optical
with cord, resting on two sheets of paper, and with mouse pointer speed a fair bit higher than default in Control Panel). Also if you have a low-spec PC, some of the games can run too slowly to play well (processor speed seems to be the main thing, not graphics card).
The ranking system in King is nice though, so when you start out in a given game you're not playing expert players (unless the game is brand new).

For easy risk-free money I'd play skill-juice, since as long as you can play alright you will make money just by turning up to the tournaments on time and playing all the freerolls. But its a slow grind, and unless the site gets bigger there's no real chance of that changing.
King has much more potential for decent money, particularly at first. Although once your ranks get high, the games you can profit in become limited, although they release new games fairly regularly so it stays worthwhile. Main thing to remember is that 2-player match games are best played free for practice. Save cash games for Progressive Jackpot tournaments and Cup tournaments, that's where the money is. Play the daily freerolls too, they give you a good guide of how you square up to the rest of the player base (and how you'll do in Royal Cups, etc). Play all the different games too, they share a lot of common elements, so getting better at Silver Screen for example will probably also make you better at Bejewelled, Midas Miner, Bomp Bomp, etc.

Lots of guides (by Dark_Dwaggie):

Many of dwaggie's guides are good beginner guides, but aren't necessary showing perfect strategies. His Four Seasons one is very good though, and Bomp Bomp Party if I recall right.
Jelly Swelly (by Sowy):
Sowy is without doubt the best all-round player on the site, and his score in the game recorded above is seriously sick
Startris (by Babymax):
These are just beautiful, but its really really hard to do, I'm not sure I'll ever get good enough at playing in that way to play it like that in cash.
