Yea its very random.  When you level up you get bonuses, and it can be items, skills, or abilities.
I got a dog when I reached level ...5? I think. But I made another one who got a dog from the get-go.
And yea wait until you meet the bears! Now thats awful.
I just reached level 8! I didnt get any items or new skills though, just more speed!

but using a net helps(if you have one....which I don't....which is why they still pwn me...). I find it curious to watch my brute not use any weapons sometimes. I find myself saying "Use the spear. USE THE SPEAR!!!" but it doesn't seem to do any good---a very willfull chap is my brute...
